Square Enix has repeatedly described Final Fantasy XV as a "Fantasy based on reality," unlike the fantastical worlds seen in most games in the series. The setting of Final Fantasy XV is closer to the real, modern world than anything else in the franchise, while still maintaining many of the tropes and audiovisual elements associated with the Final Fantasy name. Final Fantasy XV takes place in a world not dissimilar from the Earth of today, with cars and modern cities. The developers seem keen for the game to bring the series into a wholly different direction this time around, "more human than the science-fiction caricature and will focus around current world events." Just how based in realism the game will be is yet to be seen, but judging from the mile-tall dragon seen in the trailer, hardcore fantasy fans needn't worry too much.
