Gears 5 Review: The Best One Yet?
The moment to moment shooting in Gears 5 feels the best it ever has and for the first time in the campaign, this game feels like the player is taking part in a full-on war, rather than just a special ops mission. The Swarm have become such a threat that our surviving cast has to do whatever it takes to survive the day. And this ramps up in the best way possible during the games two focused Act.
The game is also really good about letting you play how you’d like, with a bounty of weapons available, it really is players choice. It is rare in video games, but the bog-standard lancer with chainsaw bayonet is still the perfect way to play, but for others who prefer the Retro Lancer or even the new Claw gun, there are enough ammo crates to ensure you can keep rolling with them.
Amongst all that, Jack, the robot buddy that has been there from day one finally gets to play in a major way. No longer is Jack restricted to opening doors, but now this bot can really make a difference in battle - whether that be by simply collecting weapons, healing teammates, stunning enemies or even taking control of them. If used correctly Jack can turn the tide is some of the tightest of spots. So be sure to collect those upgrades.
