Ghost Of Tsushima: 10 Samurai Films You MUST Watch After Finishing The Story
9. Three Outlaw Samurai (1964)
The cinematic debut of director Hideo Gosha, this film really paved the way for his successful career.
Three Outlaw Samurai focuses on samurai who have been commissioned to kill a number of kidnappers and reclaim the daughter of a magistrate. Yet the magistrate is hardly a statue of moral excellence and this leads to twists and turns in a well-directed film.
The three core characters all play with samurai tropes and for fans of Ghost of Tsushima, the fact the film broaches the topic of tradition with modernisation will remind them of the journey of Jin Sakai.
While this film shares similarities with Ghost of Tsushima it is worth watching in its own right as it handles characters, action and direction meticulously. In this film, archetypal characters clash as the plot drives them through moral quandaries about the status quo of a class-based society. Alongside this, the action scenes are incredibly well-choreographed and engaging.
The end result is one of the most impressive cinematic debuts in the samurai genre.
