5. Guardian Sweep
God of War wastes no time in throwing hordes of Nordic horrors the player's way right off the bat. So much so, that learning how to manage packs of undead draugr and bloodthirsty wildlife is key to Kratos and Atreus' survival.
Kratos' Guardian Shield is your best friend in this regard. It doesn't have the same offensive capabilities as the Leviathan Axe, but several abilities, including Guardian Sweep, will put some much-needed distance between you and the aggressors during more heated encounters.
With the Leviathan Axe sheathed (or lodged in an enemy's skull), holding R1 will prompt Kratos to brandish the shield and swing it in a downward arcing motion. Against heavily armoured or large foes, it won't do much, but against anything else, the sweep will topple them, allowing for either a follow-up combo or some repositioning.
It's also an excellent setup opportunity for Atreus to get a few hits in on the dazed drones before they're able to regain their composure.
An essential crowd control tool that'll make your survival in Midgard that little bit easier.
