Those double-chained blades are as synonymous with Kratos as the Walther PPK is to James Bond, but the weapon has been retired after spilling so much blood.

The blades lay discarded at the conclusion of God of War 3, and the new game will see the anti-hero weird a new weapon - a magical battle axe that can be infused with elemental power.

We got a glimpse of it in action in the E3 trailer, with the axe giving foes serious chills thanks to an icy upgrade. Kratos also summons it back to his hand Jedi-style after hurling into the hide of an enemy.

Hand-to-hand combat made its debut in PS3 prequel God of War: Ascension and the trailer suggests it will be back in force, which is probably just as well given that Kratos would be wide open to attack immediately after hurling his axe.
