One final question: has Red Dead Redemption 2's more serious tone, writing and characterisation changed Rockstar's approach forever?

Arthur Morgan's story was like a grown-up, more mature version of GTA's satirical humour and d*ck jokes approach. The whole experience had a gritty feel to it, one that didn't glamourise over-the-top violence as much as put players in the shoes of a conflicted man fighting for the only way of life he knew.

Instead of GTA's usual approach to side activities, like getting sh*t faced with friends, grabbing some hookers and going bowling for a laugh, RDR2 portrayed survival elements as essential rather than totally optional. The overall feeling was of a more adult-themed game (which feels weird to say considering GTA's history) that had writers maturing before our very eyes.

That might impact what happens in GTA 6. Rockstar, emboldened by a sense of superior storytelling and tone, may well want to test their newfound powers in the franchise that brought them to the dance. This could mean that IV's tinges of realism will come back in force.
