GTA V: 10 Awesome Things We've Seen So Far

2. Torture

Gta V H2 Easily the most controversial level in GTA V is By the Book, which has Michael aiming to take out a party guest with a sniper rifle while Trevor tortures a perp to try and get a make on the mark's physical likeness (to ensure the right man is killed). As Trevor, the player must administer a series of punishments, such as ripping out a tooth (root and all) with a pair of pliers, electrocution, assault with an oversized wrench, and waterboarding, in order to obtain the identity (and, at least in my playthrough, it resulted in the wrong man being killed, as announced rather hilariously through a radio broadcast). If the man's heart stops, you are also able to restart it with a shot of adrenaline. Though the scene is thoroughly unpleasant, largely due to Trevor savouring the victim's clear distress, GTA just wouldn't be GTA if it wasn't pushing the bar as far as taste and decency are concerned, albeit wrapped in an extremely intelligent examination of American life. Furthermore, the fact that a) the torture leads to the wrong man dying and b) even Trevor laments the FIB's methods, surely implies that Rockstar are tacitly condemning the very method they made us apply to one poor sap. Nevertheless, you can count on the usual Daily Mail/Jack Thompson brigade to be all over it soon enough.
