When I first heard that Rockstar were utilising the 'Random Events' feature found in Red Dead Redemption, I thought "great, maybe now the pedestrians will come to life and be more fun to interact with." Unfortunately, neither came to fruition. Yes, the pedestrians were lent a bit more intrigue in that you could encounter one being mugged, or bundled into the back of a van and kidnapped, but these randomly-generated scenarios became oh, oh so repetitive. I've lost track of the amount of times I've encountered a guy at the side of the road with a broken down car needing a lift. "Hey, do you mind taking a detour from wherever it was you were going so you can drive me to the opposite side of the map for a minimal cash reward?" Gee, that's so appealing... Then there are the dull conversations you have with the peds if you do decide to let them into your car, particularly if you pick up a drunk in one of the 'designated driver' scenarios, which involves you listening to some inane, rambling story for three minutes.
