GTA V: 8 Reasons Why It's Blatantly Misogynous

Banned in five different countries, Grand Theft Auto and 'controversy' are hardly strange bedfellows.

'Grand Theft Auto' and 'controversy' are hardly strange bedfellows. Banned in five different countries, including Brazil, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates, and dragged through courts of law up and down the country over the years, the Rockstar Games crime franchise has its fair share of detractors, to say the least. And it has been in the news for all the wrong reasons again this month, with GTA V, the latest in the popular, long-running series, earning criticisms for its perceived sexism and misogynistic attitudes toward women. The Representation Project, a movement that uses film and media content to "expose injustices created by gender stereotypes", released a video last week entitled "How the Media Failed Women in 2013", which indicated games like Grand Theft Auto are part of the problem. And Carolyn Petit, a transgender game reviewer, evoked fans' ire recently - with some even demanding that she be sacked - for 'downgrading' GTA V to 9/10 in her review because she felt the game was misogynistic in its attitudes toward women. But she had a perfectly valid point - GTA V IS misogynistic, and is crammed full of horrible gender stereotypes, with no strong female characters to root for, and radio shows advising us to treat women like urinals. Here, we take a look at 8 Reasons Why GTA V Is Blatantly Misogynous. Click "Next" to get started.
