12. The Return of Claude
The last time we saw Claude, it was in GTA: SA. The timeline says that he headed to Liberty City sometime after 1992, and we all know what the story is there. But what happened after that? Is the new protagonist of GTA V going to be Claude? There's already plenty of gossip about that here on the internet, and admittedly the trailer shows a man who could be an aged Claude, but I'm going to assume that Claude isn't the main character. It's already been established that Claude doesn't speak, and that's part of his charm. When Bill Watterson was considering animating his beloved comic strip characters Calvin and Hobbes, he ultimately decided against it. This was in part because the idea of giving the characters specific voices bothered him. He knew that the strip's audience had all imagined their own individual voices for the two characters, and to force them into hearing Calvin speak a particular way would detract from their love of the comic. The same could be said of Claude. What if he starts talking with a regional dialect? What if his voice is higher or lower than many people imagined it to be? He's better as a silent, homicidal observer, and I hope we cross paths with him again.
