11. Unlockable Cheats

Enter certain phone numbers in GTA IV and you unlock certain cheats. The other chapters in the series have cheats as well, but what if you had to reach a certain point in the game to unlock them? To obtain the cheat that allows to you refill your health might unlock after a highly dangerous mission, rewarding you for your ability to stay alive through a huge gunfight. Finishing one tributary of the main story that centered on stealing a valuable speedboat would unlock the cheat to spawn that boat. You€™d win any trophies that the developers wanted to include, as well, but trophies are for showing off to others. They have no impact on the way the game is played, unless the trophy is itself an award for obtaining a new weapon or skill. Cheats are, let€™s admit, an unfair advantage against the game. Unless the coding is flawed, a game is designed to be beaten legitimately, but the cheats are added in for those who€™ve already gone through the story and now just want to try the game a different way, and maybe get revenge on a particularly difficult mission. When I first pick up a new GTA game, I play through once fairly - no cheats. I want to enjoy it and win on the strength of my own abilities, because it wouldn€™t be as fun otherwise. But after that, all bets are off. I€™ll fill my arsenal the moment I have control over the character, maxing out my armor, maybe even spawning myself a tank. Then I€™ll head over to the first mission and see how insanely different I can play through it. The first bad guy you often encounter is pretty weak. Maybe they have a gun, maybe they don€™t. That first bad guy is not expecting a military shotgun or a sniper rifle with exploding bullets. The first time you end up shooting at someone, you€™re often just carrying a 9mm handgun. Wouldn€™t it be easier with a gold-plated uzi? It sure would.
