Australian organised crime factions arent amongst the most well-known, but several notorious groups do exist, principally in Melbourne, which functions as the countrys second city after the more populous Sydney, ahead of the likes of Brisbane and the nations official capital, Canberra. 36 high profile criminal figures were murdered within the city between 1998 and 2010, creating a power vacuum in a criminal society that incorporates both Australian gangs (including bikers and the likes of the Pettengill family, who were fictionalised in the well-received 2010 film Animal Kingdom), Asian groups (including snakeheads and Vietnamese syndicates) and European factions (such as the Serbian Mafia and various Italian networks). Said vacuum could be exploited for storyline purposes in a GTA game, allowing the protagonist to flutter between associations before taking over the city themselves.
