Characters
More so than any previous Halo game, Halo 4 devotes plenty of time to developing its characters, specifically computer AI Cortana, who spends most of the game trying to fend off her own dementia-infused destruction. Yet, even Master Chief manages to feel like an actual human being, as we learn more about his past and feel sympathetic for him, his only real source of connection being to a computer program. Black Ops 2, on the other hand, has a far busier narrative and as a result, perhaps doesnt invest us in its characters quite as well, even if it does a far better job of making its various heroes and villains feel human than previous entries into the series. In the end, while Black Ops 2 makes considerable leaps within the scope of its own series, the iconic stature of Master Chief and Cortana really wins out here; 343 Industries have made us care somewhat for a character so easily reduced to a brutish grunt stereotype. WINNER: Halo 4.
