HBO's The Last Of Us: 10 Things We Need To See

8. Providing the answers to questions the game didn't

One overriding characteristic of The Last of Us was the fact that many of the game's storylines begin, and are ultimately left, open-ended.

Naughty Dog's original leaves a hell of a lot of material to the player's imagination. For instance, audiences are never conclusively clued in as to the reasons behind Ellie's immunity, a plot line literally begging for further exploration. It's only natural to question how the potential cure to The Last of Us' apocalyptic wasteland came to be.

The circumstances behind Frank and Bill's predicament in a deserted town and the intricacies behind Tess and Joel's partnership are just two further examples of sub-plots that are never explained in any significant detail, bar a few Easter eggs within the games. Additionally, the announcement of Storm Reid's casting as Riley would indicate that the show will explore the tragic backstory behind the death of Ellie's first love interest and the subsequent discovery of her immunity in further depth.

The bottom line is that HBO have an absolute myriad of virtually untouched storylines to choose from, complemented by the news that the show will utilize original characters and storylines. Devoting screen time to any unexplored aspect of the game's storyline is only likely to subsequently enrich the quality of a story already groaning with it. Failing to do justice to such an extensively blank canvas would number amongst the most egregious of creative sins.
