How Mafia: Definitive Edition Changed HD Remakes

5. Graphical Upgrades

Perhaps the most obvious feature of the boringly titled 'Definitive Edition', the graphical overhaul takes centre stage of the game's (incredibly lacklustre) marketing, and though there are components present that shine brighter, the stunning visuals aren't to be exempt from praise.

Player expectations are often a lot to live up to. Nintendo caught heat for the lack of visual improvements on Super Mario 3D All Stars, but Hangar 13 fell into no such trap with their latest release.

The game is gorgeous, and certainly on par with modern PS4 titles. Tommy Angelo no longer looks like a boring, generic protagonist, and instead is wonderfully brought to life thanks to current gen hardware and a superb performance from his all-new actor.

Mafia: Definitive Edition redefines expectations of what HD Remakes should look like. Its commitment to the essential components of the original's gameplay is commendable (a different approach to Square Enix's and their complete deviation from Final Fantasy VII's mechanics), and as such existing fans aren't isolated this time around.
