Just Cause 3 Hands-On Review: 7 Explosive New Details

4. The Villain Is Sufficiently Villainous

If there's one thing Far Cry taught us, it's that a game in which you need to liberate an oppressed populace requires a strong, memorable villain to have as your nemesis. While we don't know whether Just Cause 3's Di Ravello will be the memorable psychopath that you become closely acquainted with like Far Cry's Vas or Pagan Min, he's a delightfully bastardly guy to root against. With the outfit of Gaddafi, the moustache of Stalin and pock-marked face of semmingly every real-world dictator ever, he certainly looks the part of a guy you want to take out. But he's a fun character too. The few cut-scenes in which we see Di Ravello, he muses about Rico as being not so dissimilar to him; a classic way to establish him and Rico as nemeses, rather than just making him an obligatory end-boss that Rico will eventually have to take out. It's telling that Di Ravello gets so much screen time early in the game, which wasn't the case with previous Just Cause villains. A memorable villain is a great incentive to progress through the game, and should be a character that you're intrigued to see more of rather than just kill (think Hannibal Lecter from the TV series). The early signs suggest that Di Ravello is being set up to be just such a villain, and it'll be exciting to see where they take the character.
