Kingdom Come: Deliverance Review - 5 Ups & 5 Downs
9. Up: Cutscenes & Storytelling Are Empowering & Relatable
Easily one of the best aspects of the whole experience comes from its engaging in its well-told, well acted narrative. On the surface a rags to riches tale of young Henry leaving the confines of his village to retrieve a family sword, across its 50-70+ hours you'll do everything from engage in multiple romances to standing toe to toe with some of the most powerful figures in the realm.
Across the entire journey, the game's belaboured tone is designed to make you really feel like you've earned each conversation. Henry's voice actor Tom McKay plays him with an affable, relatable quality - a humble sensibility that sees him transition from humdrum, middle-country bumpkin with a group of friends and tavern girl he's got eyes for, into a reputable warrior with tempered steel fighting skills.
It all combines to show less a "character" and more a person - one allowed to breathe, make mistakes and learn from them. You come out of every cutscene wanting to see where Henry's whims will take him, and that's only the main story.
