Penalties happen in earlier Madden games, but nowhere near as often as in the real world. Of course, in the game, you don't want to spend every moment of your time watching yellow flags being hurled across the pitch, but it would be nice to see them given for a variety of reasons rather than the same one or two minor infractions. Based on real life data, each player will be given a penalty rating, meaning ill-disciplined players face a greater threat of rubbing the referee up the wrong way. Player positions will also be more appropriately penalised for trouble, for example meaning that cornerbacks are more likely to be picked up on holding penalties as they desperately scramble back to halt the receiver.
