Madden NFL 23 Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

6. MUT

Madden 23 Ultimate Team
EA Sports

This will always be a 'Down' for yours truly, largely because he has a real problem with EA's approach towards borderline gambling in Ultimate Team. It sucks in FIFA and NHL, but Madden arguably takes things further by beating you over the head with relentless MUT pop-ups in other menus.

It's beyond tedious.

Also, new 'Field Passes' don't seem to work as intended on release. Maybe EA will patch that, because glitches and bugs mean it's sometimes impossible to find out what you've just unlocked (or why you bothered trying in the first place). As usual, everything is geared towards spending even more money on packs.

Ultimate Team is a crass, money-grabbing concept for sure, but there is some fun to be had if you've got supreme patience. Unfortunately, that patience is rarely rewarded with the same treasures somebody who willingly drops extra cash to get ahead gets.

Pay. To. Win.
