Madden NFL 23 Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

1. Madden Needs An Overhaul

EA deserves credit for making a concerted effort to focus on actual gameplay improvements rather than peripheral distractions like 'The Yard' or 'Superstar KO' this year. That's appreciated, but the game's fundamentals are still lagging behind what's expected on modern hardware.

Players still bump into one another like glitched out messes, or half-finished animations rinse and repeat to make some plays unrealistic. The entire package needs an overhaul, but that's probably not going to happen whilst modes like MUT are money-making monsters.

EA has a monopoly on the NFL license too, so they know they can offer incremental updates here or there without actually rebuilding Madden from the ground up like it needs to be. If only they had some competition - that'd force the team's hand and give them a wakeup call.

Maybe someday, eh?
