Something that's very easy to miss, given the jostling for various positions that constantly takes place once everyone leaves the starting gate, but make a point of actually staying in-line with the person ahead of you, as it can result in some neat boosts.

Essentially known as slipstreaming, various racing games reward you for using the wind stream opened up by those in front. In MK8, tail the person ahead and you'll start to see small 'wind lines' appear - which if you maintain, will give you a suitable bout of acceleration to overtake them.

Time this just right, and you can make the most of home straights that exist on certain courses, literally stealing higher placed positions at the last possible second.
