Marvel Gaming Universe CONFIRMED - What Needs To Happen Next

1. How This Relates To Square Enix

But this all raises another interesting question: what does this have to do with Square Enix?

Last year, it was revealed that, beginning with Crystal Dynamics, Square had entered a partnership with Marvel to create a series of licensed games based on the Marvel Universe. With Spidey having already been announced at this point, fans were quick to ask whether or not the two projects were interlinked in any way, to which Insomniac at the time replied with an emphatic ‘no’. Given the exclusivity of Spider-Man, as well as the fact that Crystal's game will be multi-platform - the answer did and still does make a great deal of sense; why would Microsoft want to hand Sony free promotion, even if one slice of the pie is better than none at all?

Now, however, things may have changed. Despite Crystal Dynamics' listing for the Avengers Project saying that it will "introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come", it's looking increasingly likely that the project is connected to Marvel's Spider-Man. In the aforementioned KindaFunny spoilercast with Bryan Intihar, a fan brings up the possibility of the Avengers reference being connected to Square's project, in light of the dialogue shown after players snap Avengers Tower, to which Intihar replies "I don't know... Peter's a smart guy."

While this falls just below official confirmation that the two projects are connected, it would've been just as easy for Intihar to say that they aren't then and there. Factor in the rumoured Guardians of the Galaxy game coming from Square Enix as well, and the scope of this new venture becomes immediately apparent. Done properly, Marvel could be gifted with yet another platform - and market - to tap into. Bring on the MGU.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
