Even though the intro of ME2 is known best for what happens to Shepard and company, it's the literal first moments of the game that provide immediate intrigue. The Illusive Man, as you'll get to know him, discussing with a yet-unknown woman that one Commander person (goes by the name Shepard I believe) and whether they'd join their cause, all while this atmospheric music plays that lets you know that this person may not be who you think.

Later on, this same man reveals that he's brought you back to life for the sole intention of stopping this alien species known as the Collectors from wiping out all of humanity. How will you stop them? Well, not without some back-up and resources, both of which can be found across many varied locations throughout the galaxy.

Again, Mass Effect 2 succeeds in making you invested effectively AND efficiently. It allows the game to get itself started right away with little delay, doing wonders for the overall pacing. After all, with the many worlds and fascinating stories this game has to tell, taking command of Normandy 2.0 and setting off for your first destination can't come soon enough.
