Mass Effect 2: 10 Reasons Why It's The Best Sci-Fi Game Of All Time
7. The Pitch-Perfect Soundtrack
In recent years, synth-heavy soundtracks have become something of a commonality. No complaints on this end, but back in 2010, this style of soundtrack made Mass Effect 2 have a unique feel to it. Rather than the likes of John Williams' bombastic and epic-sounding tunes, these synth-heavy tracks played quite well to the game's aesthetic.
See, this galaxy isn't exactly the most optimistic or honorable kind of place. There's plenty of grit, bad blood, among other things on nearly every planet, and the OST catered to that concept exceptionally well. You've got Omega, this grungy, grimy Deus Ex-type section where crime is the only way to get anywhere. To complement the feel, the music is low, down in the dirt, and perfectly suited for a shootout or sketchy nightclub. Follow that up with a trip to the pristine Citadel, where it looks like everybody has to take their shoes off to walk around there, and then the music gives a high-society feel with a sense of regality to it.
Composer Jack Wall does such terrific work in this score and deserves plenty of credit for establishing much of the game's dense, all-encompassing atmosphere.
