Mass Effect 4: 10 Killer E3 Announcements BioWare Must Make

3. Spaceships

Mass Effect €“ a game that many claim to be the apotheosis of the space opera €“ is currently lacking one of the best things about space: a genuine, legitimate interaction with the ships which first allowed us to break through the earth€™s atmosphere and explore the infinite possibilities of the universe. Indeed, one of the most enduring images from the original trilogy of games is that panning shot of the SSV Normandy SR-1 (and SR-2), showing off the stealth reconnaissance ship€™s streamlined frame, pristine paint-job and menacing spinal mass-accelerator cannon. The Normandy may well be the coolest vehicle in all of video gaming but our interaction with the gorgeously-crafted behemoth is limited to walking around its many decks and making small talk with the crew. Like getting a lap-dance, we are invited to look but are forbidden from touching the 350-tonne spaceship. It would have been incredible to have been put behind the wheel and tasked with avoiding asteroids or - better yet - engage in space combat with an enemy ship. Sadly, the franchise€™s moving on from Commander Shepard will likely also signal the series bidding farewell to the Normandy. We will never know the feeling of controlling Shepard€™s trusty spacecraft. However, the transition of the series onto next-gen hardware may finally give BioWare the horsepower needed to give the player more control over our ship€™s interaction with space. This could be the gameplay addition to really bring the series into its new era with a sizeable bang and would be a gigantic E3 announcement.
