Mass Effect Andromeda: 10 New Gameplay Features That Will Change Everything

4. A Move Away From Cover Shooting

If the current gaming landscape is being filled with open-worlds and ‘persistent online environments’, then the last console generation was dominated by cover-based shooters, both good and bad.

As the Mass Effect series evolved, it streamlined its initially awkward gunplay mechanics, and ended up resembling a punchy, Gears of War-style shooter. That focus on cover-based tactics appears to have been phased out in Andromeda.

While it’s likely that more populated areas will feature plenty of cover, most of the firefights featured in recent Andromeda trailers have taken place in large, open areas, forcing characters to remain mobile in order to evade attacks.

Cover will still be present, of course, as BioWare have revealed that the player will automatically dip into cover when approaching a solid surface. This will either make for a fluid, seamless experience, or it’ll be a complete nightmare. Either way, the chance to be a little more gung-ho when approaching battles sounds like a welcome change of pace.
