Mega Man Games: Ranked Worst to Best

7. Mega Man 8 (1997)

With Mega Man's transfer to the Sony PlayStation comes a Mega Man game that is incredibly divisive in the fan community. The art style is either "love it or hate it" and I seem to be in the minority when it comes to loving it. The anime cut-scenes (featuring awfulsome voice-acting where some of the actors even stumble over their lines!) are fun and the story is the most in-depth of any Mega Man game up to that point. The robot masters are mostly inventive and all have very unique level design, sometimes to the point of confusion (Astro Man's level, anyone?). The music is probably the weakest aspect of the game, trading in the familiar 8-bit style for a more traditional scoring, although familiar themes do pop up. Strangely, it downgrades the "collecting screws" system introduced in Mega Man 7 by having a limited number of screws hidden throughout the levels instead of making the screws available by enemy drops. This is the weirdest change going forward in a series, and it's no surprise that it was replaced with the system from Mega Man 7 when the following game was released. Mega Man 8 is a mixed bag, but it's worth the time put into it.
