9. Sense Of Humour
The Metal Gear Solid games have always had that idiosyncratic sense of humour - largely thanks to creator Hideo Kojima's input - and here that humour is even more exaggerated, it seems. What's surprising is how self-aware and keen to parody itself the game is; given how infamous this series is for being extremely melodramatic, even maudlin at times, it's refreshing to see an entry that takes itself less seriously, something that Platinum Games failed to make clear in the demo as they no doubt should have to their benefit. It's for the most part pretty silly and light-hearted, lacking the preachiness of the other games in the series (though there are a few moments of exception), which is appropriate given that the story (somewhat intentionally) isn't up to the standards of the previous titles either. Nevertheless, it's a whole lot of fun; the story is inane but it knows it, winking and nudging at us along the way.
