Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain - 10 Insane New Features You Must See
4. 'Phantom Cigar' Time Lapses
This was briefly shown at the E3 conference, but we got to see it in greater detail here - especially in tandem with the next point in the list - as in many instances within the game world you're going to need time to pass faster than it would if you were just waiting around. Things like shift patterns for guard patrols will change and creatures in the wild will also move, and so with this in mind you have access to a limited number of 'Phantom Cigars' that when Snake smokes, brings up an on-screen clock you can set to some point in the future. Snake himself doesn't appear to change, age or deteriorate, instead the world around him warps and speeds up, with shadows and sunlight breaking across the various buildings and surrounding forestation. In short it's a very impressive visual effect, although time will tell just how integral it's going to be to actual gameplay or specific missions.
