3. Unreal Expectations
The buildup for Metal Gear Solid V has been nothing short of extraordinary, and is still happening as we speak. Kojima has done an excellent job so far of slowly revealing more information, and keeping us starving for more when the reveals finally did happen. My jaw literally dropped when I saw the reveal trailer from PAX 2012 of what was then only known as MGS: Ground Zeroes. The amount of detail in Camp Omega was really just amazing, and obviously unlike anything we had witnessed in a Metal Gear game before. The Phantom Pain trailer left us wondering if we would be getting
two new Metal Gear games (and as of this writing, it still has not yet been confirmed as to whether or not Ground Zeroes will be getting a separate release from The Phantom Pain portion of MGS V), and when the first reveal of MGS V was made at the GDC convention, fans of the series were bursting at the seams. By the time MGS V is finally released, I think it will have taken the unofficial title of the most anticipated game release of all time. The last time expectations were this high for a Metal Gear game was for the release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Regardless of how you felt about that game as a whole, the proverbial gut punch we all felt when Raiden was revealed as the main protagonist quelled all the anticipation fans had for the game. Is there any realistic way for this game to live up to everything it could possibly be? I am afraid that is now an almost impossible task. If anyone is up to surpassing expectations, it probably is Hideo Kojima. However, he may have set the bar so high with what we all hope MGS V will be, that he may have set himself up for a colossal failure.
