4. An 80s-Style 'Action Filter' For Gameplay

Phantom Pain containsa bevy of mediainfluences, from James Bond to Moby Dick and back again. Something youcan still see remnants of this in the game though, is an '80s-style action filter', a mode the team were apparently working on for quite some time was an '80s filter' for gameplay.

In the 2015 version of the game this has been toned down to be frame-tearing/burning on the corner of your screen, but originally it was set to completely change the aesthetic of the experience.

"RUSH" had very 70's texture & tone of film. In fact we studied 80's image & developed "80's filter" for MGSV as TPP is placed in 1984. CONT HIDEO_KOJIMA (@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN) February 11, 2014

Kojima tweeted about this multiple times, but eventually had to pull the idea as the build of Phantom Pain just couldn't run whilst keeping a stable frame rate.

Surely it was just an aesthetic overlay that added grain effects and the occasional sepia-toned burn mark, right? We'll never know, but let us know in the comments what you think of such an addition - it could end up being future DLC.
