This was one of the first things to get 'leaked', as it appears on theCollector's Edition disc with the game - almost as some way of the developers getting their original vision out there, despite Konami strangling them with their own purse strings everywhere else.

It remains the most shocking omission of the lot, mostly down to the fact that without the final Sahelanthropus battle and talk between Boss and Eli (Liquid Snake), the retail version of Phantom Painliterallysees them leave, only for every characterto completely forget there's a gigantic Gundam-looking tank strolling around Africa.

As Sahelanthropus looks like Metal Gear REX (especially before it starts walking) it's most likely the final battle would'vecrippled it considerably, letting it seem as though Liquid and young Psycho Mantisspend the interim years between TPP and Metal Gear Solid cobbling together what would eventually look like REX.

Without this scene, Eli's placement in Phantom Pain comes off as more of an easter egg cameo for those who figured out what the symbols on his jacket meant (Liquid People), as oppose to the meaningful multi-game plot-connector it was supposed to be.
