Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Everything We Know So Far

3. The Cardboard Box Is Back

It wasn't just the secret Silent Hills-reveal that had Kojima's touch of genius all over it - there was also the Konami live-stream that saw over a million intrepid fans tune in from around the world to get a glimpse of the game in action; to then see how they've brought the idea of hiding in a cardboard box to the next generation. Not only can you acquire all sorts of different boxes from Playstation 4 console packages to that of the Xbox One, but the bigger ones you can hide in can also have graphics on the top. You can then - in something that could only be done in a Metal Gear game - stand up (with the box on your head) if it looks like you're about to be spotted, and fool a guard into thinking he's looking at another human being, all thanks to a picture of another sentry being plastered on the box. That's not all though, you can also get boxes with scantily-clad women on, harking back to the MGS 2 and 4 days of placing saucy magazines on the floor to distract patrols. Here in Phantom Pain the guards will be so enamoured by the picture on a floating box that it frees you up to take them down with some deft punches, or get away altogether.
