Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Everything We Know So Far

8. RPG-Style Crafting Of Weapons And 'Tower Defence'

In addition to manning your base with guards, goats and weapons, Phantom Pain also features a return to the R&D section of your hub-world named R&D (or Research and Development). In Peace Walker these were certain guards you could train up in specific areas to bolster up your armoury in-mission, but in PP the implementation is twofold. Firstly the same is true for when you're in-mission - items researched back at home can be dropped back in while you're in the field, some actually being able to knock out guards on impact if you get the timing and placement right. But secondly - and way more excitingly - it's the security side of base-building that opposing players will see first-hand when attempting to infiltrate your base. In the press demo at Gamescom Konami showed off a player's base that was thoroughly decked out with surveillance cameras, laser tripwires and flying sentries; further expanding on the idea that the technology present in Metal Gear's version of the 80's is a bit further along that ours was.
