Metal Gear Solid: Ranking The Boss Battles

6. Gray Fox €“ Metal Gear Solid

The Context: As Snake walks through a hallway littered with severed limbs and dead soldiers everywhere, it's clear that someone - or something - vicious awaits in the room ahead, which is coincidentally where Otacon must be located. It turns out that the one wreaking havoc all over Shadow Moses is a mysterious face from Snake's past fitted with an exoskeleton. He's also looking for a fight. The Fight: Bullets proved to be rather ineffective as Gray Fox will just deflect them with his katana, meaning that this is another hand-to-hand battle. Even more interesting is that it is far more complex than the game's final battle against Liquid, encompassing three different stages to the showdown. Gray Fox will leap all over the room and attack you whenever given the chance, which means that success hinges on finding the prime opportunities to pull off the basic punch-punch combo. This one really excels over other hand-to-hand battles though because of the multiples phases; after depleting the majority of Fox's health bar he will begin activating his stealth camouflage and hiding out in cleverly chosen spots. After that phase is cleared he then starts mixing in his stealth camouflage abilities against Snake up close in combat, similar to a teleportation ability. Furthermore, all throughout the fight Fox begs for the pain to be delivered to him with hauntingly-delivered lines such as "Hurt me more!" that come across in his pained robotic nature, the true horror of which we would only find out through further exposition from the rest of the game.
