Lastly, the divisive - but actually totally manageable after the first encounter - EMMIs, are Metroid Dread’s coolest innovation.

Resigned to small “horror room” portions of the map where gameplay changes to be more stealth-focused, Dread will point out that you have a VERY low chance of escaping, noting there’ll be one counter/parry flash to watch out for.

Brilliantly, there’s actually two.

One just after you first get grabbed - look to the EMMI’s outstretched hand - and another when its mask opens.

The timing on these changes based on how long you’ve been struggling against that particular miniboss I.e. if you’re new to the area, the second flash will likely be as soon as the mask opens.

Another simple pointer is timing a basic jump to leap straight over an EMMI that’s right in front of you. Equipping the Phantom Cloak once you’ve broken line of sight will make the EMMI default to its animation of scanning you once it catches up instead of directly pursuing, but you can also leap straight over its instant-grab animation, surviving by sprinting the other way.
