Mortal Kombat 1 Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

5. The Roster Is Varied And Balanced

To the disappointment of some, MK1 doesn't contain any new kombatants (for the time being). But that's not suggesting the 23 playable characters aren't top of the line.

The selection contains the usual suspects; Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Raiden, etc. But the roster also includes some blast-from-the-past fighters like Nitara, Li Mei, Reiko, and Havik. Because this lot haven't appeared since MK: Armageddon, it's refreshing to see these lesser-knowns getting another shot.

Now, let's look at the most important aspect of the MK1; the fighting. Rather than maintaining the same moves as before, every competitor has had their Specials and Kombos heavily revised.

Although some kombatants are more accessible than others, everyone brings something to the table. Nitara's ability to fly makes her aerial attacks more dangerous. Johnny Cage has a unique Hype Meter, allowing him to cancel his opponent's Specials. Reptile can switch from human to lizard, giving the Zaterran an imaginative move-set.

Despite the fact Mortal Kombat's roster has always maintained a high bar, this entry might have the best selection yet. And with Homelander, Omniman, Peacemaker and more to be added, things should only improve in the future.
