Mortal Kombat 9, in an effort to provide more bang for the player's buck, knew that, while satisfying, the Story mode would not be enough.

With a Krypt full of different unlockables to be discovered, players would need new and intriguing ways to earn Koins (there's that K again) in order to discover all the secrets that lie within. And while Arcade mode provided a succinct, efficient method to farm currency, Netherealm Studios went above and beyond with the inclusion of the Kombat Towers.

On first glance, players might suspect these challenge towers to be further ways of honing their skills, as the first couple conditions require them to focus on special moves only, or shrink the size of the arena to force them to rely on combos instead of spamming projectiles.

However, the further one progresses, the sooner they discover the absolutely insane modifers made to traditional battle system. Players will find themselves fighting an entire round upside down, subject to balls of ice falling from the sky that freeze on impact, or even having head attacks disabled... because both characters are fighting without heads, and are slowly bleeding out.

The culmination of the tower also provide the single most brutal challenge in the game as the 300th, and final, challenge tasks them with beating Goro, Kintaro, Mileena, and Shao Khan consecutivelyr for a tidy 10,000 gold pieces.

Kombat Towers subsequently became a staple of the series, providing endless, and often, hilarious replay value to the game.
