Players of Mortal Kombat 11 were thrilled to see Shang Tsung was portrayed by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who played the character in the 1995 film, Mortal Kombat. Little did they know that the franchise has made many callbacks to the movie.

In the intro fighting scene between Johnny and Liu Kang, Johnny mentioned that he admires Sonya. Liu Kang retorts by saying “It’s not her mind you’re admiring.” Liu Kang says the same thing to Cage in the movie.

In the intro fighting scene between Sub-Zero and Kitana, Kitana says she will defeat her opponent by “using the element that brings life”. In the film, Kitana says this line to Liu Kang so he knows how to defeat him.

In Mortal Kombat X, Johnny Cage sometimes tells Goro that he owes him for his sunglasses and he's going to punch him in the balls. Both of these quotes are references to their fight in the film adaptation.

In Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, the text for Kano’s Story Mode is written in Australian slang as a nod to how the character is portrayed as an Aussie in the movie.
