5. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks

The Mortal Kombat series had a bad track record when it came to spin-offs, but thankfully, Shaolin Monks not only managed to be a great adventure title, but one of the best in the franchise.

A retelling of Mortal Kombat II, the game put players in the shoes of Liu Kang and Kung Lao - both having different move sets and skills that were easy to pick up but challenging to master.

The game was a beat 'em-up/brawler, allowing you to tear through hordes of enemies while retaining series staples such as stage traps and Fatalities. It also had some light RPG elements, featuring an upgrade system for Liu Kang and Kung Lao's combos and special abilities.

But true to Mortal Kombat's history, the title featured numerous pieces of bonus content that kept players wanting for more, such as an arena mode, the ability to unlock the original Mortal Kombat II, and even play as Scorpion and Sub Zero during the main game.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks proved that the brand could excel outside of the fighting game sub-genre, it's just a shame the series has not had more spin-offs since.
