Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot: 8 Things We Need To See
6. A Self-Contained Story Over Franchise Building
It's unclear as to whether the reboot will be a stand-alone project, or the start of a long-running franchise. Let's hope it's the former, as a one-off production bodes better for the movie's clarity.
Whichever way the filmmakers go though, there's no lack of source material to draw from. And even though there is enough story in the long running saga to fill a whole series of films, the reboot would be best advised to keep the narrative for the initial movie relatively simple. To its credit, this is another thing which Mortal Kombat 1995 got sort of right.
A numerous quantity of recent movies have fallen ill to the bug of cramming in numerous narratives for the sake of fan service and universe building, and have come out messy and ill-conceived as a consequence.
Critical negativity will most likely be stacked against this project, so it needs to land on its feet with the storytelling. The linear narrative of humans defending Earth Realm as told in the original games would surely be sufficient enough to carry the inevitably crazy content of the rest of the movie, and hint towards something larger to come.
