9. Sareena

Sareena is a Netherrealm demon who made her first appearance as a boss in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero; she is an assassin of Quan Chi's who later turned against him and fought for the Forces of Light in the Battle of Armageddon. Always shown as a beautiful young woman; her true demon form has never been shown in a Mortal Kombat game and could become a character variation in MK X. Sareena assisted the elder Sub-Zero in defeating Quan Chi only to seemingly be killed by Shinnock; it is later revealed that this only killed her human form. Her essence was banished to the Fifth Plane of The Netherrealm and tortured for years before finding a portal to escape; arriving in Outworld she found that she could use the energy of that Realm to sustain a human form instead the previous method which involved energy provided by Quan Chi. Upon meeting the younger Sub-Zero; she is offered sanctuary with the Lin Kuei as he felt he owed her for aiding his older brother. Sareena pledged her allegiance to the clan and vowed to protect it in gratitude but soon fell back under Quan Chi's control; she is later freed by Taven during Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and rejoinied the Forces of Light. Sareena is one of the characters that can be seen fighting in the background of The Pit stage in Mortal Kombat 2011; and with her history with Quan Chi is a must for MK X as both a villain and, later, a hero.
