Mortal Kombat X Trailer: 6 Things You Need To Know
4. The Combat Is Fast And Fluid
The dream for any developer of fighting games is to have players be able to string together almost balletic combinations of hits, kicks, blocks and parries to make it look like one effortless movement. In MK, there's no room for being cautious and backing off, the overriding point of the games has always been driving aggression with a hint of considered tactics. Look at how the two fighters move in the video, they move like human beings rather than cartoonish super-beings, both being hyper-aggressive fighters who can chain huge combos together, with Scorpion coming off as the overall victor. That doesn't mean Sub Zero doesn't get some good whacks in throughout the trailer though, just look at the combination of gut punches that results in Scorpion being frozen in ice and knocked to the floor with a glacial crash. Check out the reversals too, in the first flurry of punches Scorpion pushes up on Sub Zero's arm with a painful looking break on his elbow, only for Sub Zero to hold Scorpion in the same position and deliver some walloping kidney punches. A minute or so later, as Sub Zero comes in with the sword for what should be a devastating blow, Scorpion successfully parries and knocks the sword clean from his hands. Clearly the control scheme in the game is going to have to be a mix of complex and simple actions, but with any luck achieving fluidity like this will be blissfully simple.
