Netflix's The Witcher: Why Jaskier Should Replace Triss In The Love Triangle
2. He Already Has A Rivalry With Yennefer
A key part of the original Witcher love triangle is the rivalry (AKA Yennefer bullying Triss) that develops between Triss and Yennefer as a result of their respective relationships with Geralt. From the few brief interactions between Yennefer and Jaskier we got see in season one, it seems that this rivalry/bullying is already an aspect of those characters.
Now, the likelihood is that the less than friendly dialogue between the two was merely there for the purpose of illustrating that Yennefer finds Jaskier annoying, but it could so easily be expanded upon in future seasons to instead be a more personal dislike of two strong personalities fighting over the same lover. Adding this layer would really make Yennefer's rescue of Jaskier from the mage Rience interesting too, if the Geralt/Jaskier romance had been established by then, of course.
For a slight tangent from the main point of this entry, another positive of swapping out Triss for Jaskier in the love triangle would be the distinctions in their escapades with Geralt. Think about it, bards and sorceresses are very different people, much more so than, oh I don't know - two sorceresses?
Given both characters' histories, these escapades would almost always mix work and pleasure - Yennefer's place in the Continent's high politics meaning balls and banquets that allow for some diplomacy before the couple find a quiet spot while Jaskier's need for inspiration would see him following Geralt as he kills monsters with some ballad-material coming afterwards. It's a distinction that allows for some efficient storytelling and a bit of variety at the same time, as well as providing more talking points for Yennefer and Jaskier's arguments.
In summary, Jaskier has already been established as a great rival to Yennefer and would continue to be one.
