Nintendo NX: 9 Things It Needs To Avoid Another Wii U Failure

2. Wii U Game And Controller Backwards Compatibility

If there's one console manufacturer that doesn't need constant reminding about the merits of backwards compatibility, it's Nintendo. The Wii was backwards-compatible with the GameCube, just as the Wii U was with the Wii. It's therefore reasonable to expect Nintendo to continue with this gamer-friendly philosophy for the NX. This is a very important point, because as I write this, there are a lot of Wii U owners out there feeling seriously sidelined by Nintendo's premature focus on its next-gen console, and worried that they wasted money and excitement on a console that's soon to be abandoned... which is kind of exactly what's happening. It goes without saying that the majority of people who bought a Wii U are Nintendo diehards, given that the console failed to capture the imagination of other segments of the market. As such, Nintendo needs to reassure its small but devout group of current owners that their loyalty to the company is valued, by letting them carry over their games over to the NX. That tablet-like Wii U gamepad cost a pretty penny too, so Nintendo should let people use it as a controller and a second screen for the NX if they so wish, complete with the streaming capabilities.
