Nintendo NX: 9 Things It Needs To Avoid Another Wii U Failure

3. Make The NX A Better Media Center

To be clear, Nintendo should definitely not make a big song-and-dance about how incredible the Nintendo NX will be at allowing people to watch TV, or watch TV while watching their friend play games over Skype, or faffing about in weird interactive menus while watching a movie on Netflix. Microsoft tried all that toss with the Xbox One, and it didn't work - not by a long shot. But a smooth media center experience is crucial to a games console in this day and age. While the Wii U had the standard selection of movie-viewing and video apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and Amazon Instant Video, many of them worked poorly and were prone to crashing. Other major apps like HBO, Sky Go, NOW TV and Spotify were never released for the Wii U. This sent the message that the above services just didn't see the Wii U as a relevant enough platform to make it worthy of their fully supported apps. Nintendo needs to change its image in this area, and also add in basic features like allowing people to watch movies and listen to music from external hard drives. For better or worse, the days of games consoles as pure gaming devices are over, and Nintendo needs to move with the times.
