Nintendo NX Console: 5 Big Things You Need To Know

5. There Will Be A Gimmick

You'd have thought that Nintendo would hold back from adding potentially alienating gimmicks to its consoles after the Frankenstinian Wii-U tablet-controller... thing. But late Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata wasn't deterred, and when talking about the Nintendo NX back in March, he took a casual swipe at Microsoft and Sony when he said, "If you only expand upon existing hardware, it's dull". While you could dismiss Iwata's words as typical business fighting talk, Nintendo is one company you can genuinely trust when it says it will offer gamers something new (though Nintendo is also living proof that 'new' doesn't always mean 'better'). Iwata added that Nintendo is aiming to "surprise players" and that the Nintendo NX will be a "dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept". In one of Iwata's final interviews before he passed away, he explained that the reason for all the secrecy around the NX is that he doesn't want competitors to steal the idea. Secrets, surprises and new concepts? It sounds like Nintendo's got something big up its sleeve. We know that this concept will probably involve multiple consoles, but the rest remains a mystery. Could it be something that utilises Nintendo's recently-announced intention to start developing for mobile platforms? Virtual Reality? A comeback for the Power Glove? We're not sure, but there'll definitely be something that makes it stand out from the homogeneous PS4 and Xbox One.
