Nintendo Switch: 15 GameCube Games That Must Be On Virtual Console
8. Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
If the reveal trailer for the Nintendo Switch taught us one thing, it’s that Nintendo is always fond of looking back and adding in the best features that past games have had – but changing or altering them subtly with a new twist. Case in point here? The characters in Mario Kart Switch seem to be able to hold two items.
This began in the GameCube title Double Dash!! as the karts had room for two racers sitting in front and rear seats. The character at the rear held and threw items. Swapping seats could be done on-the-fly as could (strangely) co-op play for tactical advantages such as item stealing or double boosts from the starting line.
What’s more, this version of Mario Kart also gave us classic tracks like Peach Beach, DK Mountain and Yoshi Circuit. Sheer excellence! And it was also the second-best selling GameCube title for the entire console’s lifespan, so you can’t argue with the numbers even if it didn’t really innovate.
Such a shame it never had online play and was stuck with LAN-only options.
