Nintendo Switch Online: 10 More SNES Games It Desperately Needs
7. Mortal Kombat II
After Years Away from Nintendo consoles, Mortal Kombat 11 was pretty well received on Switch. The game ran at a smooth 60fps and had every feature you’d find on Xbox, PlayStation or PC. Sadly I’m order to make that happen the graphics took quite a hit. The visuals were noticeably poorer than on other platforms, particularly the single player Krypt campaign.
Still, things could be worse. Back when arcade cabinets were still the benchmark for graphics and gameplay Nintendo’s port of the original Mortal Kombat to the SNES was a notorious misfire. It played OK but by censoring the MK’s trademark violence Nintendo ripped out the game’s bloody, still-beating heart.
The port was ridiculed for recolouring blood as blue beads of “sweat”. A heart ripping finisher was replaced by a fatal gentle-chest-stroke.
By Mortal Kombat 2 some lessons had been learned(except in Japan where the blood was now inexplicably green). Character models were done using motion capture and actors were sprayed with water to make them look like they were glistening with sweat. This time the violence of the arcade version was kept very much in tact.
With new fighters, finishers and fatalities MK2 was the ultimate Mortal Kombat on SNES. It would be great to see this classic installment of the iconic fighting series on Switch.
