Overwatch: Ranking Every Cinematic Short (So Far)

9. Shooting Star

A fantastic character piece emphasising the difference between a media persona and real life, this short would be higher on the list if not for its tendency to "tell, not show", with more exposition in news reports and Hana and Dae-hyun's conversations than in the actual short itself.

It's strongest in the moments the audience gets to see Hana's flashbacks, short as they were, as well as when she's fighting the Gwishin omnics. These moments clearly communicate that she's a serious, traumatised soldier behind the scenes, while Dae-hyun not-so-subtly emphasising how NOT glamorous and NOT luxurious Hana's life is, just sounds unnatural.

The short still excels, however, in presenting a larger real world reality about how powerful a hero's public image can be in bolstering a country's feeling of safety. Hana's determination to protect her country really fleshes out her character, clearly presenting her celebrity persona as a front, with the only accurate personality trait being her determination to "win"—because winning, for her, means survival.

While a great short for D.Va, showing her off as an incredibly complex character, it's not one of their best. Even if "not their best" is still "amazing" and "better than most".
